11 Things You Should Bring To The Gym

Whether you are an absolute beginner or an avid gym goer, these are some things that would come in handy when going to the gym.

1. A GOOD MINDSET

Okay, I know this is not a physical thing, but you take your mindset with you EVERYWHERE!

If you don’t have your mindset right, you might as well not even take your butt to the gym. Half of the battle is going to always take place in your mind first. If you get this part right, then you will have a much easier time achieving your health and fitness goals.

Believe you can do it, show up, then execute! That’s truly the secret to success.

2. ATHLETIC WEAR

If you are just starting out, don’t be so concerned with how you look. A simple t-shirt and some breathable dark colored bottoms will work (trust me, butt and/or crotch stains are not for the faint hearted). Wearing black or dark color bottoms helps mask all that ‘junk’ sweat. You can basically wear anything that you don’t mind getting sweaty or gross that already resides in your closet.

Remember, you want something that will help you get the job done, this means that you wear it to improve your workout, not to hinder it.

All that being said, I’m also a proponent of doing things in style so, if you like to show up and show out, go on with your bad self! Go splurge on a new gym outfit or two or ten! I know I always do a better job at things when I feel and look my best.

Gym culture is different all over the place but people at the gym do stare, and look, and it’s easy to feel judged. Don’t ever let anyone shame you or make you feel bad for how you look. Your body, your choice.

REMEMBER, you are awesome just the way you are. You don’t have to look any certain way. So show up how you feel most comfortable. Confidence and comfort trump all other things in this arena.

3. ATHLETIC SHOES

You want to make sure you are wearing shoes that are comfortable to move in, this feels like a no brainer but you’d be surprised how many people who start training with the improper footwear.

Definitely know if your have a flat foot or an arc and just go to your local shoe store!

Here are a few examples that could be beneficial for different types of training styles:

4. HEADPHONES

Getting in the zone can take way less time if you have a playlist set up that gets you absolutely amped! Any kind of headphones will suffice, however here are some of my favorites:

(Also a Spotify or SoundCloud subscription would definitely come in handy!)

5. SOMETHING TO HYDRATE

Hydration is so important when training.

Good old fashioned water works, or even something with electrolytes would benefit you greatly!

6. SHAKER BOTTLE

Shaker bottles are so handy for gym goers! You can put just about anything in them to help you with your “gains” or “losses” depending on your own specific gym goals.

7. PRE-WORKOUT

Pre workout is not for everyone, but for those of us who need a little extra pep in our step to get the job done, I have found that pre-workout is a great tool to use to utilize.

8. PERSONAL TOWEL

Some gyms provide personal towels to help with keeping the club tidy, but some don’t and if you are a “mega sweater” then having a personal towel around you can help tremendously!

9. SELF CARE ITEMS

Depending on your schedule and what you need to do throughout your day, you might find yourself scrambling to get ready or prepared for your next task of the day. Having personal products on you at the gym helps with wasting any “in-between” time so you don’t have to run back to the house to get ready.

Most gyms have showers in them but every gym with have a bathroom with a sink where you can primp and take off any of that post-gym funk you may be carrying around with you.

Here are some personal self care must-haves that would be super helpful to keep in your gym bag (and remember these are all optional):

Obviously omit the feminine items if you have no use for them, but also… you would definitely come in clutch by keeping some of these things on you for a female gym partner, just sayin’. (BONUS POINTS! YEAH!)

10. SOMETHING TO PUT IT ALL IN

And of course, you will need a backpack, duffle bag, or satchel (what a fashion statement) to carry all of these awesome gym-goer things in!

11. LOCK FOR STORAGE

You may be thinking, “Holy crap, that’s a lot of stuff to be lugging around with me everywhere while I’m trying to get a workout in.” And yes, it can feel like that at first, and if you are not about carrying your bag with you all around the gym in between sets or machines, then a lock for a gym locker would be very handy in deed!

Here are some great ones that vary in price and ease of use:
